When setting a book up on Amazon/KDP or Ingram/Spark what is going to be important about the marketing effort there are three things that help the casual on-line book browser come up on your book. First are Categories, second are Keywords, third is a good Description that optimally includes the Categories and the Keywords.
Categories
The proper Categories will place the book in the right section. The three categories you can select should be as close to the theme and content of the book as possible. Since they use a subset of the Standard BISAC Codes, a few suggestions will help me to find the closest match. And, delightfully, the print version has a different set than the eBook does for some stupid reason.
Keywords
Proper Keywords will enhance the categories. Keywords generally are up to about 15-20 characters in length and can be multiple words. One or two may directly refer to a category, others might expand on it or something specifically in the description. You get an opportunity to include 7 of them for KDP.
Description
The Description gives the potential buyer an idea as to what he is going to be reading. The description on the site can be the same as what’s on the back cover, but you have a lot more real estate to work with, about 4-5 times as much. Expanding on that text and craftily include categories and keywords will increase what the search engines refer to as “relevance”. The higher the relevant values are (figured out by some fancy algorithm relative to the search) then the better the result for the individual looking for something along the lines of your book, the more likely it will be presented before other books with similar characteristics, if at all.
Summary
Essentially you need to get into the mindset of someone looking for a book like this. What would you put into a search request to find something similar? That’s the kind of thing that makes good Keywords and Descriptions.
